Work on the Donnybrook Bridge Street Housing Project is moving forward with Smith Constructions now on site.

Alliance Housing chairperson Murali Mahendran said the organisation was delighted with the progress of the 10 independent living units despite unforeseen delays during the siteworks phase.

“The advancement of this project is a cumulation of diligent hard work and support from the State Government, Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup, and the community,” he said.

“We look forward to the completion of construction and being able to offer these units to those aged 65 and over, living in the community.”

Smith Constructions contract administrator Kevin Parker said work had begun in early February with the development’s internal roads surveyed and started.

“Passers-by will soon witness the progressive construction of these units,” he said.

“We would like to express our gratitude to Alliance Housing WA for awarding this contract to Smith Constructions and we look forward to a great team effort in order to deliver this much needed community housing project.”

Concrete floors for the first unit are expected to be poured towards the end of the month whilst the installation of stormwater drains, electrical services and in-ground plumbing are currently being completed.

Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup president Leanne Wringe said the project would have a direct impact on improving the quality of life of local people, allowing them to live independently and stay connected with the community.

Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns said as Donnybrook’s representative in the McGowan Labor government, she was excited to see the progress on the project which would allow older residents to live independently as their housing needs change over their lifetime.
